Fillings Q & A

What’s a filling?

A filling is a dental procedure that Dr. Simic performs to treat cavities caused by tooth decay.

Tooth decay occurs when plaque sits on your teeth for too long. Certain acids in plaque eat away at the hard outer layer (called the “enamel”) of your teeth. Over time, this creates a tiny hole, called a cavity.

Cavities start small, but they grow larger if they’re not taken care of. Untreated cavities can lead to more significant tooth decay, severe pain, and tooth loss.

Dr. Simic treats your cavity by drilling out the decayed portion of your tooth and “filling” in the space with a substance that hardens and protects the damage in your tooth.

What materials are used in fillings?

Dental fillings can be made from a variety of substances, like gold or silver amalgam, but Dr. Simic also offers tooth-colored fillings made from composite resins and plastic.

These tooth-colored fillings are incredibly effective at treating your cavity and preventing further tooth decay, but they also have a similar color and translucency as your natural tooth enamel.  This allows them to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your natural teeth and maintain the cosmetic integrity of your smile.

What’s the process for getting a filling?

Dr. Simic administers your filling with a quick and easy process that only requires one office visit.

First, she numbs your tooth and the surrounding tissue with a local anesthetic. Next, she removes all of the decay from your affected tooth with a drill, air abrasion instrument, or laser.

Once all the decay has been cleared out, she cleans the bacteria and debris out of the cavity area and fills it with the filling material. She uses a special curing light to help speed up and enhance the drying and hardening process, which only takes a few minutes. Once your filling is dry, you’re all set! You’ll be able to eat, speak, and smile regularly as soon as you leave the office.
